Data Recovery on Failed Hard Disk

Hard disk is a permanent storage device for storing electronic data on a magnetic surface. Hard disk was invented by Reynold Johnson which was capable of storing five million characters. Now-a-days hard disk capacity has increased tremendously with storage capacity of 1 Terabytes. As storage capacity has increased so chances of losing such a huge amount of data form the hard disk.

Hard disk failure can when there is a break down of the hard drive (termed as physical failure of the hard disk) and data stored on the disk cannot be accessed. There are various kind of failure which our hard disk suffer the most common is "Head Crash". Head of the drive is an important component which is used to read and write the information from the hard disk. Head just moves over platter only at a distance of micrometer. Any sort of collision results in severe data loss. If we try to do the recovery by our own can result in further damage of the data.

There are numerous factors which causes hard disk failure. The most common are power surges, voltage fluctuations, electronic malfunction, physical shock, wear and tear, corrosion, exposure to high magnetic waves, sharp impact, high temperature exposure etc. Hard disk failure is increasing higher, as to increase the speed or read/write operation we are rotating the hard drive with great speed. If any thing goes wrong with the normal operation of hard disk causes severe damage.

There are several techniques used by data recovery experts to recover the data from the failed hard disk. It is done by moving the hard disk to working system. Hard disk is open to replace the parts like head of the drive, arm and chips and sometimes change of platter is also done to make it working such that data recovery can be done on failed hard disk. Hard disk recovery requires clean and dust free environment such as Class 100 Clean Room

Apart from the physical failure of the drive, if our hard disk has suffered a logical crash then in this case data recovery software is helpful. Logical crash can be termed as inability to access the data from hard drive or data lost due to accidental format, viruses or software malfunction or even sabotage.

In case of recovery of data from severely damaged hard disk you should consult data Recovery Company for saving your important data which is trapped inside the failed hard disk.

RAID Data Recovery | Hard Drive Recovery

Data recovery from RAID systems and Hard Disks: Recovery of data from a RAID configuration can be a lot trickier than recovery from stand alone hard disks. RAID 0 and RAID 1 used together (RAID 0 + 1) and RAID 5 offer the best levels of protection. Of course with the simplest form of fault tolerance i.e. RAID 1 the second hard disk mirrors what's on the first one and should one of the hard disks go faulty the other one will seamlessly take over. In RAID 0 of course there is double the chance of losing your data. You need only one of the hard disks to go faulty and you won't be able to boot into your operating system.

However, there may be occasions when you need a specialist data recovery service. Instances are when the power to your hard disk has failed and you are unable to get it to spin. Unless you have an exact copy of that hard disk and are willing to roll your sleeves up and swap power units/motors on the drives and willing to take the chance of not mucking it up you would probably want to get a specialist in. Specialists will also often be able to recover data from

* file servers
* storage area networks
* application servers
* all manner of RAID, from RAID 0 to RAID 10
* web servers
* network attached storage

But data recovery doesn't of course only become necessary when there is a hardware fault. You could have deleted data, erased a file, or cleaned out your old emails. It's surprising what can actually be recovered from your hard disk or RAID array.

When choosing a RAID Data Recovery firm do choose one that offers a money back guarantee or, even better, a guarantee that you will not be charged if they aren't able to recover your data. Some data recovery companies also offer a free trial software that you can download and use to test your RAID array to see if there is any possibility of recovering data.

Harddisk recovery

If you have been using a computer for sometime, inevitably there will become a time when something terrible happens to your PC, usually when you least expect it, but also when you could most do without it! You know the times I'm talking about, you've just finished that 5000 page document in word, and remembered that you have forgotten to 'Save' since about word 2500. No problem, you go to save the document but just before you make the command, BANG, a wierd flash on the screen and then the computer resets itself! But then it won't boot up! Along with panic, bad language and the frantic pressing of that on/off switch, you come to the slow realization that your hard disk may be fried!

If you haven't yet experienced this then I am happy for you, but I also feel slightly sorry for you in as far as you have still got that sudden feeling of desperation and misery to come!

However, take heart, if this unfortunate event does happen to find it's way into your life, all is not lost. This is when you need to find out about hard disk recovery.

Hard Disk Recovery
The most important thing you must remember when you have lost your precious information is NOT to write anything more to the damaged hard disk. This is absolutely paramount. The reason for this is that whenever you delete a file to your recycling bin and even if you empty it, it is not actually deleted from your hard drive. What actaually happens is that the operating system just marks it as having been 'deleted'. Then when a new file is written to the hard disk, the operating system happily overwrites the files marked 'deleted'.

Now you can see why many people have got into trouble for downloading things they shouldn't have, and then erased them to the recycle bin. Later the prohibited material has then been found on their hard disk as it has not yet been overwritten by any new files. Be warned!

OK, back to hard disk recovery. Obviously once your important files have been overwritten by new files you're in big trouble, so just to reiterate, do not write any new files to the affected hard disk.

Very often with a fried hard disk you will not even be able to boot into the operating system, so the next stage of hard disk recovery, would be to remove the disk and transfer it to another computer, preferably with the same operating system or newer, as that which was on the damaged disk. This has a number of advantages in as far as firstly you cannot accidentally write any more to the disk, and also there will be a good possibility of being able to recover files by using the operating system from the host computer.

Although there are many variables and different reasons for data loss, there are also many different methods for hard disk recovery. Sometimes it is quite feasable to use hard disk recovery software on the damaged system but this obviously depends whether it is bootable or not.

All said and done invariably the hard disk recovery process will involve using another operating system to access the files on the damaged disk. If another computer with a compatible operating system is not available, another solution would be to install a new hard disk on to the original machine and put another operating system on to this. It is quite feasable then with a combination of the file manager and windows explorer that the files from the damaged disk can be recovered.

Unfortunately life is rarely so simple, and you may well find that the problem is even more serious than first thought! What next I can hear you scream? Well this is when you will need that hard disk recovery software. Now there is plenty of software out there and some of it quite expensive. You can't really blame the developers as they know they will have desperate customers who will pay top dollar to get 'all those photos' back! However there are still a few freebies out there and one that s well worth trying is <a href="http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/welcome.htm">PC Inspector File Recovery</a>. Now it's not perfect by any means which can be said about all the hard disk recovery software out there, but it's a great starting point. Of course the 'free' price tag should make it that much more appealing!

To use it, you need to install it on the host machine or the new hard drive with a seperate working copy of Windows. You must never install it onto the damaged hard disk. Once it has been installed, let the application run and follow all the steps which are easily followed in the included tutorial guide.

Hopefully this hard disk recovery software will do the job but if not that is when you may have to make that horrible decision of whether to buy more expensive software or take the plunge and pay a specialist service to doit for you. If you decide on the latter, you will have a very good possibility of getting your data back but very often at a very high price.

As for me, I would try and exhaust all the free and cheap possibilities first. That said, if you have no idea of the back or the front of the computer then maybe you could end up doing more damage by 'dabbling' than paying someone to sort it out in the first place!

The Ins And Outs Of Data recovery

Your computer has crashed (again), taking all of your important files with it (again), and you've (finally) gotten smart and started looking into computer data recovery services and options. From NTFS disk recovery to software programs that you can buy to ones that are already installed on your computer and services that specialize in that sort of thing, there are many options for you to protect those vital files, or at least get them back should the horrible but very possible occur.

Most new computers these days come with a recovery program already installed or come with a recovery CD in the package. This is found in a backup feature that is performed either automatically or manually through Windows. The detail with this option is that you're assuming that your computer hasn't been completely destroyed through one incident or another. If it has been, then your information has gone with it, backed up or otherwise, if the backup is stored on the hard drive itself. Fortunately, most of these backup programs also come with an option to burn those backed-up files to a CD or other device, so they're safe from the ravages of whatever might kill your computer's hard drive.

You can use a CD for data recovery in another sense that you can manually take all of your important files and burn them onto a CD. This is nice and easy, but you can't always be sure that you've gotten all of the important stuff. Yes, you may have all of your documents and other important files, but what about things that you may not be aware of? For example, some people may not know of the existence or importance of drivers. If your computer crashes, all of your devices (modem, printer, mouse, and so on) are usually still all right. However, drivers are what ran them. If you had to wipe out your computer and reinstall your operating system from a separate disk, odds are that it won't have the right drivers for the brand or type of devices you have attached to your computer. It's important, for ease of getting your computer back to running order, to back up these drivers as well. Many of the software programs will make sure these, as well as other hidden yet vital files, are protected as well.

Then there are the services. Towing and recovery, hard disk recovery, they all basically do the same thing. In most cases they can't fix your computer if it's been fried by a fatal error or killer virus. However, they have nice equipment and tricks of the trade that they can use in the recovery of your login information, business files, that senior thesis you've been working on for the past year and a half, even frivolous things. They can generally, through lots of work, recover anything you want from your computer and transfer it to another (functional) storage device. This can be very costly, up to hundreds of dollars, but if the files lost were important enough, this might be an option that you would consider.

Hard Disk Drive Recovery

A hard drive crash or other data disaster can wreak havoc on a computer system, be it in a home or office environment. The key to getting your system up and running again as quickly as possible lies in hard drive recovery software. With the right program, you can drastically reduce the amount of time it takes to get your systems up and running again to the same state before data loss occurred.

NovaStor's line of software solutions includes a couple of products designed specifically for home systems and for larger networked computer systems. Both the NovaBACKUP and NovaNET programs come bundled with the tools you will need to effectively and efficiently create and schedule backups, and to restore your systems when it's necessary.

NovaStor's hard drive recovery options allow users to restore their systems much quicker than other products on the market. In the home, users can restore their computers to working order from the NovaBACKUP software in a timely fashion. In office environments, the same results can be achieved through its NovaNET software, and in some cases, it's as easy as pushing a single button.

NovaNET features One Button Disaster Recovery support for Hewlett-Packard drives. Like its name implies, if you're using HP drives and must recover backed up data to your system, this can be achieved with a single button push. NovaStor's products were designed to be functional and easy-to-use regardless of your level of technical know-how and all of this is offered at an attractive price point. For more information and a free trial of its software packages for backing up and restoring data, visit the NovaStor website today.

Hard Disk Error Management and Recovery

Many people don't realize that it is normal for a hard disk to encounter errors during reading, as part of its regular operation. As hard disks are pushed to the limits of technology, with tracks and sectors spaced closer together, weaker signals used to prevent interference, and faster spin rates produced by the spindle motor, the chances of an error occurring while reading the disk go up dramatically. In fact, the state of technology has advanced to the point where it is not practical to even try to avoid them.

Of course having actual errors appear to you while using the hard disk is unacceptable, since you count on your disk reproducing the data you store on it reliably, for a period of years. Hard disk manufacturers know how important this is, and so incorporate special techniques that allow them to detect and correct hard disk errors. This allows them to make faster, higher-capacity drives that appear to the user to be error-free. The more the technology for storing data is pushed, the more sophisticated the error correction protocols must be to maintain the same level of reliability.

Making a drive that actually produced read errors infrequently enough that error detection and correction wasn't necessary, would mean greatly reducing performance and capacity. This is sort of like touch-typing: there's a school of thought that says "if you aren't making any mistakes at all, you're going too slow". If correcting mistakes is easy, as it is with a word-processor, it's better to type 100 words per minute and correct an error or two, than to type 75 words per minute error-free. As long as the errors are detectable and correctable, and they don't occur too often, it's better to plan for them, and then tolerate and deal with them, than to be too conservative in order to eliminate them.

FAT Partition Data Recovery Software

FAT data recovery software is safe, non-destructive data recovery software which helps you to recover lost files and directories from hard-disk and removable storage medium. It provides recovery from data lost due to overwritten, formatted, deleted or corrupted partitions in all logical crashes.

FAT file retrieval software has been developed for FAT 16, FAT 32 partitions on Windows 95/98/ME/2000/2003/XP series. When the software is running, a complete scan of the damaged drive is performed to recover and locate lost or deleted files, folders. After the scanning is completed, found data in the damaged disk is displayed in tree structure and data can be easily transferred to the working disk.

* Software Support for FAT, FAT12, FAT16, FAT32 file systems.
* Provide recovery from deleted, corrupted and damaged files.
* Help in recovering data when your hard drive is accidentally formatted.
* Recover data from bad sector affected storage drive.
* Advance search option for the refined FAT files data recovery results.
* Recovers compressed files and folders from FAT file system.
* Multi storage support for hard disks and other storage media including all IDE, SATA, EIDE and SCSI disk devices.
* Helpful in computer forensics or Scientific analysis.
* Recover Data still if "DRIVE NOT FORMATTED" message is displayed on your computer screen.
* Data Recovery even recycle bin is Empted or SHIFT+DEL key is pressed.
* User friendly interface with GUI support and easy to use even for the non-technical persons.

Hard Disk Recovery

Hard disk recovery is a service we have been providing for clients since 1999.

There are two main types of data problems - hardware and software.

Software problems present as a disk that is recognised by the BIOS but won't boot correctly, situations where files or complete directories have been deleted or can no longer be seen in the directory structure, the disk has been formatted or similar.

Hardware problems present as a faulty electronic circuit board caused by power spikes or component failure, spindle motor failure, problems within the platter chamber associated with the platters themselves, the read/write heads or the associated electronics.

If the fault is within the platter chamber it is vital that the chamber only be opened by experienced engineers in a "clean-room" facility. We have such a facility, which is fully certified.

Symptoms of hardware problems show up as peculiar noises coming from the disk such as clicking, clunking and whining. Other symptoms show up as non-detection by the BIOS, disk not spinning and obvious physical damage.

IT managers please note that we have developed specialised procedures for dealing with multiple disk RAID arrays.

It should be noted that we never perform data recovery on the actual disk itself. To attempt to do this is to put at risk the integrity of the data to be recovered, as any invasive (writing) process has the potential to reduce the chances of success. Even the attempt to boot a disk is an invasive process.

Our procedure is always to non-invasively create a construct of the client disk, then to create analogs (clones) and perform our analysis on these. In this manner the prime data is never put at risk.

Follow this link for more information about our hard disk recovery services.

Data Recovery Services

zTron Systems offers specialized data recovery services with its state of the art data recovery lab. Every safety precaution is taken when working with client data. The zTron systems lab includes a class-100 clean room facility and data vaults to ensure data security. Lab technicians are specially trained and skilled at the art of data recovery.

zTron Systems has encountered numerous data loss scenarios ending in successful data recovery. Data has been recovered from severely failing hard disk drives, raids, floppy drives, zip drives, jazz drives, REV drives, flash drives, tape drives, iPods, digital cameras, CD and DVD disks.

Head crash: notice the visible damage on the surface of the media

We are fully equipped to handle data recovery under any data loss scenario, business or personal. Our rate of success is very high. However, it is well known that some data loss situations are not recoverable, especially in the event of a major head crash. (photo at right)

While our methods of data recovery are some of the best in the market and proven to be highly effective, there will always be scenarios where data cannot be recovered. Any data recovery company claiming to have a success rate of 90% or better is not being truthful. The "head crash" drive in the photo is a prime example of a drive that cannot be recovered due to the extensive damage to the media. Without question, there is no data left to recover.

In order to determine the probability and cost of a recovery situation, it is important for us to examine the failed hard drive or media. We will perform a non-destructive diagnosis which will allow us to provide you with a cost analyses and listing of good files that can be recovered.

What to do if you experience data loss...

1) Turn the computer/disk drive off immediately! Do not power it back on!

2) Do not try cheep or free "do it yourself" data recovery utilities. Attempting to recover data yourself can make a bad situation even worse. The disk or disk drive is most likely experiencing some type of physical failure. The longer it runs, more damage will likely occur.

3) Do not take it to a computer dealer or local service center. Despite claims of data recovery services, they don't have much more capability than "do it yourself" data recovery software utilities. It has been our experience at times to have a client loose everything due to the efforts of someone who is not qualified and does not have the facility/tools required to perform such services professionally. The data could have been recovered had it have been sent in for professional data recovery services to begin with. Click here to read the complete account of a customer who made the mistake of taking her hard drive to a computer service dealer for data recovery. Unfortunately, all data was lost.

4) Do not physically try to disassemble or open the drive. This can destroy all data beyond recovery. This must be done in a controlled static safe, clean-room environment.

ZIP Floppy Disk Data Recovery

Although now more and more advanced storage technology has appeared, you have many ways to store your data, however, due to various reasons, new storage media temporarily can not able to replace the floppy disk. Floppy disk has the advantage of convenient, easy to carry and its price is very cheap, still occupy important storage market share. The most important point is that almost every computer is equipped with a 1.44 M floppy disk drive, it is the most convenient choice to backup a small amount of data with floppy disk.

The storage data on Floppy disk very easily lost, If the data is very important and you have not backuped it, the important thing is of how to rescue or recover the floppy data. Now widely used floppy disk is a 3.5-inch disk with a 1.44M storage space, after formatting a floppy disk, it is logically divided into three parts: TRACK, HEAD and SECTOR.

General said, floppy disk was damaged and the loss of data can be divided into three categories:

1.

Zero track bad, unable to see the drive and list directory, the general error message display on screen is "General Failure error Reading drive A Abort, Retry, Ignore?"
2.

One part of a floppy disk damage and directory can be listed , but there are a certain number of a file or several files can not be readed or damaged or read the paper after the, the general error message is "Sector not found error Reading drive A Abort, Retry, Ignore?" or "Data error Reading drive A Abort, Retry, Ignore?"
3.

Physical damage, to restore floppy disk data needs the help of some disk data recovery software.

Hard disk data recovery software

Hard disk data recovery software is specially developed keeping in mind all yours data loss situation on windows hard disk drive and USB removable media. Support data recovery from missing deleted corrupted formatted partitions and similarly restore files and folders when empties recycle bin. Windows data recovery software restores files after the loss of MBR, boot sector corruption, file allocation table or partition table entries. Data Recovery Services

and the companies that provide them. This Website is simply a handy guide to the various companies offering data recovery services, hard drive repair, backup software and computer forensics.

Data recovery basically means taking files that were once damaged or corrupted due to either natural disasters, virus attacks, user errors, software errors or hardware failures and restoring or retrieving the data in those files. As the instances of hacking and virus cases escalate, so will the number of people needing help with their data.

The availability of companies offering recovery services and software spans a wide range from large firms to small shops and from totally dedicated shops to firms offering a broad array of computer-related products and services. One good thing to remember â€" many of these companies will only charge you if they are successful in recovering some data. If they can't help you with your data problem, you usually don't have to pay.

In most cases, the majority of the data is recoverable, so don't automatically assume that your data can't be recovered. The ballpark average percentage of successful retrievals is in the 80-90% range.
And if you've been told that your data is unretrievable, we suggest you get a second opinion from another service just to make sure.

How does the process often work? First, you contact a service. Usually they advise you how to send them your media. Once they receive it, they evaluate it as to how much data can be recovered. They will then give you a price quote and an idea of the data that is recoverable. Some companies have fixed prices per type of media or size of job; Other companies cost out each job individually. You then either approve of the work order and have the work done, or you politely decline their offer and have the media returned to you.

HD Drive Data Recovery

Hard drives are non-volatile storage devices that are designed to hold data. Modern hard drive comes with a SMART technology which helps the computer diagnose itself and be able to solve the majority of its problems. Despite of all modern technologies and extra care taken for hard drive maintenance hard drives do fail. If you have been using your computer for a descent amount of time there is a good chance that your hard drive can fail. This can be a very simple reason for hard drive crash. The failure to access hard drive could be caused due to logical damage to the file system or any physical damage that had occurred to the storage device preventing it from being mounted by the operating system.

If you have lost your data due to hard drive crash, electro-mechanical failure of the drive, software malfunction, viruses/malicious software, power outages, natural catastrophe or any other reasons the best thing to look in for a hard drive data recovery specialist.

In a data loss scenario there are two things that come into scene Data Recovery Software and Data Recovery Services.

The physical damage of a hard drive can always lead to some data loss and in many cases this can also results in damage to the logical structures of the file system. Head crash, failed motors cause data loss. Most physical damage to hard drives cannot be repaired by end users. For instance, opening a hard drive in a normal environment can cause dust to settle on the surface, resulting in further damage to the platters. It requires technical experience to perform this type of repairs. This is where hard drive data recovery companies play a major role in helping the end user to recover their valuable data from a damaged hard drive. They work in the class 100 clean room on the damaged hard drive using latest tools to retrieve the lost data from the magnetic media. If your drive has experienced mechanical failure just hand over your damaged media to the data recovery experts and they will recover all you lost data.

For most problems related to data loss or data corruption on your computer, Data Recovery Software will probably help to solve the problem. Data Recovery Software can help in retrieving data from many logical issues like formatted drive recovery, missing file or directory recovery, drive not booting, inaccessible drive, support copying of system locked files like registry hives, damaged or corrupted partition table, recovery of deleted files and folders on FAT and NTFS hard drive or partitions, retrieve compressed files from NTFS partitions, data recovery on damaged FAT and NTFS partitions, and formatted hard drives. Most of the hard drive data recovery software programs available are easy to install and use and are virtually self maintaining. Choose an appropriate data recovery software. There are times when people opt for certain software for recovering their lost. However, you should be cautious while using such tools because selecting any wrong option can overwrite on your existing data, making it impossible for you to recover your data.

Trying demo versions is another good thing that can help to choose good data recovery software. Demo version of the data recovery software help you analyze its working, features and the amount of data which the software can recover. If the software displays the lost, deleted data then the software surely can get back your data. If you have lost data from your hard drive due any of the logical reasons mentioned above just get a hard drive data recovery software and retrieve your data in just few clicks.

However, loss of data is one of the major negative effects that a single hard drive crash can cause; therefore one must try to prevent it as much as possible.

Hard Disk Drive Recovery

To perform a successful hard disk drive recovery, a good backup copy of the data previously contained on the failed hard disk drive is needed. Your success and timeframe for recovery will be somewhat dictated by the backup and restore methodology used. From tape drives to hard disk backups, the restore window can range from minutes to hours to days.

Hard disk drive recovery is never a fun assignment. The owners or stewards of the lost data will need it back almost immediately. Depending on the value of the data and what role it plays in the day-to-day business processes for a company or department within a company, the hard disk drive recovery may be holding people (and production levels) at bay - they might be unable to do their jobs during the recovery process.

If the hard disk drive that crashed was a central server, for instance, application software and web-based tools may be unavailable until the hard disk drive recovery process is completed. Using outdated tools to accomplish the recovery only adds to this critical recovery timeframe. Though located on premises, using a tape drive to perform the hard disk drive recovery could take many hours.

The best method for restoring a hard disk drive recovery is usually a disk-based backup software application which has access to a local data store. Many online backup software products, including RBackup from Remote Backup Systems, Inc. feature a local data store expressly to facilitate the hard disk drive recovery process. A redundant copy is stored offsite as part of the remote backup service and using our BitBackup technology the most recent version of files are located on the client's local area network.

If you are preparing for a hard disk drive recovery on behalf of your company or clients, make sure to prepare using the best tools available. RBackup Remote Backup software has been instrumental in hundreds of hard disk drive recoveries in countries all around the globe. Put the power of our experience to work for you.

USB Hard Disk Recovery

By far, USB based external hard disk is the most popular external storage device due to the capacity, portability and low cost. With increasing demand in storing work files, digital photo, videos, MP3 songs, USB hard disk seems to be the right solution for the right price.

Today, the market is flooded with such USB hard disks and major brands include those from Seagate, Maxtor, Lacie, Toshiba, Western Digital etc.

On the downside, due to mobile nature of users, the hard disk may be damaged more easily due to :

* Accidental dropping, vibration or impact
* Water spills
* Improper ejection before the drive is disconnected
* Power surge
* Errors prompting to "reformat" the disk volume
* USB device detected by unable to access the volume to read or write
* Garbage characters replacing names of files or directory

Due to increasing capacity of USB hard disk, it is normally used as key backup device and loss of data from it could mean great loss to the user.

Hard disk recovery - the freezer trick.

It wasn't actually a virus that infected my mom's hard drive, but some bad chips were overheating and causing everything to go haywire. The problems I had on my drive (that I tried to boot it with) were probably because of scrambled signals on the IDE line or something like that.

I'll get to the point: we found a way to read the data, and remarkably well too. According to several places on the internet (which I always trust) you can put the hard drive in the freezer for a few hours to make it cool enough to copy some files (and it turns out this actually works). Rinse lather repeat until you've got everything.

That was a bit slow for us. We had to copy a 350MB MS Outlook datastore (don't get me started) and it was overheating and failing before it could finish. So we came up with this:

Hard Disk on the rocks!

A hard disk, on the rocks. It's triple-bagged inside a bag of ice, and we had to press the ice up against the PCB side of the disk to keep it going. It would error as soon as we took the pressure off.

It's hard not to laugh—it actually worked! Combined with Knoppix, we copied all the important files to my 20GB iRiver (which automounted; did I mention the new version of Knoppix is awesome?). Tomorrow we'll figure out a better solution, probably including dry ice, to try to get the less important things off (pictures and music).

My hard drive is fine (not the failed one, but caught a bug from the one that did), I just have to rebuild the partition table. Checked in Knoppix and the data is still good. So all ended well. Just remember the freezer trick ;-)

Hard Disk Recovery

Almost everyone who has always used a computer has erased a file that they subsequently wanted to take backwards. The less lucky may get too had the experience of losing a whole difficult effort. Luckily, difficult disk recovery allows for lost information to be recovered.

Hard disk recovery is potential because of information remanence, which means that some information continues to live on the difficult effort still after it has been deleted. While information remanence is advantageous to difficult disk recovery, there is too a downside; that is, information remanence is one of the almost accessible tools used in cyber-espionage. That's why computer protection experts say you that merely erasing a file doesn't ever totally erase it.

A difficult effort contains a series of difficult disks that revolve quickly. These disks are coated with magnetic particles, related to a magnetic recording taping. The difficult disc is really really lasting, and better upkeep will guarantee lengthy living. If it is not exposed to utmost temperatures, and does not sustain any physiological harm, it can well live for ten years. However, difficult disks do get several moving parts, and can get damaged or don away.

Hard disk recovery reconstructs lost files, irrespective of whether they were deleted unintentionally or are unreachable payable to a crashed difficult effort. In some circumstances, the difficult disc may get unreachable because of a hardware trouble. The actuator weapon, a tiny automatic weapon that moves backwards and forth across the disc, may get suffered an automatic mistake. In this case, the information is not lost at all, but is just unreachable payable to this automatic trouble. Similarly, the tour panel may produce flaws, which may have the difficult disc inoperable. If there are odd noises, or no disturbance at all, the reason is possible automatic, and a technician will get to dismantle the difficult effort to fix the trouble. In some cases, the automatic trouble may induce the effort itself to get damaged, which may immediately impact the information. Alternatively, information departure may happen payable to a software trouble.

When a file is deleted, the operating structure marks the file figure with a role that informs the computer that it has been deleted. The deleted information is really yet on the effort until the file structure overwrites it, but the operating structure can no longer approach it. The procedure of difficult disk recovery finds the information that the operating structure is oblivious of, but yet exists in private clusters on the difficult effort. However, clusters that have get corrupted or physically damaged cannot be recovered. In these cases, difficult disk recovery has a greater likelihood of success if it is attempted instantly after the bankruptcy then as not to offer the sectors with missing information a chance to be overwritten. A professional difficult disc recuperation service will not make on the difficult effort itself, but will instead have a sector transcript of the difficult effort and job from that.

Hard Disk Data Recovery

Generally, the drive failure can be categorized as physical and logical failures but all of them are recoverable.

Logical failure: This is a most common failure in hard drives where file system on the drive is logically damage. Logical damage is primarily caused by

1. Human error which includes accidental deletion of files, accidentally formatting drive or reinstalling operating system to recover lost data.
2. Power outages may cause file system structures getting damaged, causing a variety of problems, system crashes, or an actual loss of data.
3. Virus attack may also corrupt the file system on the drive, resulting in operating system to crash.

Common Symptoms: When a hard drive logically fails you may notice these issues

1. The computer will fail to start dispalying messages such as "system file missing" etc.
2. The system does not load operating system and displays a blue screen.
3. The systems start to load the oerating system but crashes and automaticaly keeps restarting it self.

Our Disk Doctors data recovery labs technicians and engineers are a highly skilled team of trained and experienced in the latest state-of-the-art data recovery techniques with years of successful recoveries experience behind them.

Expert tips!!!

1. Do not do a format or create new partition.
2. Never try to reinstall the operating system as it will overwrite your data.
3. If you are familiar with the symptoms above, why not try our data recovery software If you are not sure then always seek a professional help, call us at 0800 043 6611 and one of customer representative will be there to help you.

Physical failure: Hard drives consist of different components which are bound to fail. This type of failure is more complex and requires special clean room facility. Main causes are

1. Old aged drives and more extensive use of drives can cause physical failure.
2. Fluctuation in power supply or connecting wrong power cable to drive.
3. The drive is accidentally knocked down
4. Motor jam, Stiction etc.
5. Smoke seen coming from electronics (PCB).
6. Firmware corruption.
7. Natural disasters such as flood, fire etc. and many more.

Common symptoms: you may notice these issues when there is physical failure

1. The computer fails to boot and the hard drive is now no longer recognized in BIOS.
2. You may hear strange sound from the drive like ticking or clicking.
3. The hard drive is completely quite and you don't get any sound or vibration like a healthy drive.
4. The BIOS recognizes drive but with incorrect parameters e.g. wrong drive model etc.

Hard drive data recovery

Hard drives are complex. They have a circuit board and a number of moving parts. In terms of hard drive data recovery, the first thing that you must evaluate is whether it is a hardware problem that is stopping you from accessing your data. Common hardware problems include a faulty circuit board or problems with the actuator arm.
hard drive

A faulty circuit board is characterize by a drive that does not 'spin up', meaning that platters are not turning underneath the copper wire. A faulty actuator arm or more serious mechanical error is characterize by an abnormal clicking noise or a grinding noise. The best advise in determining whether you have a hardware problem is to listen to the sound of your hard drive. If you cannot hear the platters spinning (i.e. it is quiet when it is turned on) or you hear more serious noises then you should stop using the drive immediately and you will need to send your drive to a hardware data recovery service.

Hardware data recovery can be expensive because technicians may need to disassemble your hard drive to fix the problem. Hard drive data recovery is usually done in a 'clean room' as hard drives are sealed to avoid errors caused by dust or other particles. Also hard drives are finely tuned machinery and it takes specialist equipment to read the platters from a physically damaged drive.

If you are sending your hard drive to a data recovery specialist then you should attempt to obtain an upfront estimate of fees (although you will rarely get one), ask that if you send your hard drive for quotation purposes will they send it back to you in the same condition if you choose not to use the service, and make sure you send it to a reputable company as you may only get one chance at hard drive data recovery.

Hard disk recovery tips

Data recovery is the process of recovering data from storage or database systems from all types of devices and systems. You can recover data?s by using Hard Disk Drives, Floppy Disks , Memory Cards , CDs, DVDs etc., Data Recovery can help you to retrieve your lost or corrupt data and recover the data in a fast, secure and professional manner. Data recovery is the phenomena of recovering and restoring information or data from a storage device commonly called Hard Disk Drive. Hard Drive is a magnetic disk on which we can store our data .When the data is physically overwritten on a hard disk it is generally assumed that the previous data is no longer possible to recover. Data recovery is useful for a number of things. Perhaps you lost your passphrase.

Data recovery is salvaging data stored on damaged media, such as hard drives or disks or recovering deleted files. When you delete a file Windows only removes the file from the file system table which keeps track of all the files on your hard drive. Data recovery is our specialization. Our support engineers have more than 16 years of experience in developing tools and unique techniques in the data recovery industry.

Support key constraints like (unique key or primary key), entities, data types, attributes, default value and null value of all major versions of Microsoft SQL server. Support to recover multi-volume and solid archives.

Windows Vista's own BitLocker feature can also be used to encrypt the OS partition of a Windows Vista system. Windows stores file data in clusters, with the size of those clusters being determined by the type of file allocation table (FAT) you?ve set up to use. The FAT stores the links between clusters, which when connected together, make up each file. Windows Data Recovery Software recovers such all file if some program does not use Recycle Bin when deleting files. It can also recover files moved to Recycle Bin after it has been emptied.

Recovery techniques Two main techniques are used to recover data from logical damage. While most logical damage can be either repaired or worked around using these two techniques, data recovery software can never guarantee that no data loss will occur. Recovering files logically includes recovering the data portion of a tape that was successfully recorded, but for some unknown reason cannot be read. The recovery of files from this type of problem often requires multiple passes using proprietary software that restores the file to the HDD. Recover your hard drive now!

Hard Drive and Clean Room Technology

Hard disk technology has been around since the Fifties. The large multi-platter based systems, IBM 305 RAMAC, were only used in large mainframe systems. It wasn't until the Seventies and Eighties that hard disk storage became more available. This was due to cost reductions, innovation from magnetic media formulations, storage capacity, performance, and manufacturing techniques.

Hard disk storage manufacturers have been always working to improve the technology. Storage space, data transfer rates, and internal error checking have been the guiding principles of hard drive technology. Ontrack Data Recovery works hard to maintain our capabilities to be compatible with these emerging technologies so that we can provide the best hard drive recovery for your client's data. What are some of the advancements in hard disk storage devices? What are some common data loss scenarios with hard disk storage? What are some of Ontrack Data Recovery's capabilities that set it apart from other data recovery companies? This document will help answer these questions and more. Let's begin with looking at the inner workings of the hard disk itself.

Hard Drives — Technology in Action

As you know, hard drives are a combination of sophisticated electronic and mechanical systems that incorporate a number of specialized motors and electro-mechanical components to read and write data.

Hard drive technology has substantially advanced in the past 10 years. In fact, hard drives are designed to manage themselves in addition to reading and writing data. Hard drives today use a number of algorithms to verify data on the drive and also maintains a 'Defect Management' list internally that constantly monitors their own health and performance . If a sector is beginning to fail, the hard drive's electronics will remove that sector from use. In addition to this, S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) circuitry has been incorporated on many hard drives and is used to monitor all of the internal systems.

Despite these safeguards, hard drives can fail. There can be a number of reasons for hard drive failure, for instance physical damage can result when the hard drive or case is jarred while operating or even when powered off. Power spikes or fluctuations can damage the electronics or corrupt the data on the drive. Internal mechanical parts can seize up due to high temperatures if the drive does not have enough airflow to keep the unit cool.

First Look: Data Rescue II hard disk recovery

No matter how careful or experienced you may be, you will lose files eventually, either by accident or through a hard disk failure. When you lose files through an accident, such as deleting a file by mistake, you can often retrieve that file by dragging it out of the Trash. However, if you lose a file through a hard disk failure, your files are usually gone for good unless you have a special data recovery program like Data Rescue II from Prosoft Engineering.

Unlike traditional hard disk diagnostic tools that try to repair damaged hard disks by physically manipulating a hard disk's contents, Data Rescue II takes a different approach. The program can either clone your entire hard disk to another hard disk, or temporarily copy a hard disk to another one. That way the program never risks altering the original data, which could cause further data loss.

To recover data from a hard disk, you just need to install Data Rescue II on a Macintosh and plug an ailing hard disk into your computer through a USB or Firewire cable. In many cases, the Finder may not even recognize the hard disk as valid, but Data Rescue II can still find and access the hard disk anyway. This feature alone separates Data Rescue II from other hard disk diagnostic programs and virtually guarantees that you'll be able to access any hard disk no matter how badly damaged it may be.

Testing the limits of hard disk recovery

As our digital appetites increase, so does our need to store our data.

But as we move into the terabyte age with trillions of bytes of storage available for a few hundred pounds, can we rely on hard disk drives to safeguard precious information? And what happens when they do fail or are damaged?

When I had my first computer in 1983 it had 32KB of memory and it was not until 1988 that I had my first hard drive - which had 40MB of storage.

Almost 20 years later and my main desktop can store 160GB of data while my laptop has 120GB and I have a pocket drive with 40GB more capacity.

My back-up routine is poor - I have my music and photos archived on several DVDs but it has been months since I last backed them up.

If the hard drive in my main computer were to fail, I would lose thousands of photographs and hundreds of songs. Every hard drive is a crash waiting to happen and so it is clear I should invest in a back-up storage system.

With 500GB of external hard disk storage available for as little as £89 online and the first terabyte single hard drive released at the start of the year, there is no excuse not to back up.

Inside the hard drive

A recent report from Google engineers suggested that there is no link between heavy use and hard drive failure.

Hard drives less than three years old that are used a lot are less likely to fail than similarly aged hard drives that are used infrequently, according to the report.

However, a Carnegie Mellon University report recently suggested that the failure rate of hard drives used in the business sector was a lot higher than manufacturers' claims.

So what happens if your hard drive fails or is damaged in an accident? To test durability we put a basic 40GB external hard drive through a series of vigorous challenges.

On it we had some photographs and documents and challenged data recovery firm Kroll Ontrack to retrieve our data.

We dropped the drive out of a second storey-window, immersed it in a pond, drove over it and hit it with a hammer.

Was the firm able to retrieve our information?

Rob Winter, chief technology officer at Ontrack, said: "It was very badly damaged and we couldn't recover the data.

Open up the picture to see what happened to our hard drive.

"The fundamental reason it wasn't recoverable was that many laptop hard drives have platters made of glass and in this case they shattered. When that happens it is impossible to get the data back.

"Usually laptop hard drives are glass while workstation platters are metal. If the platters had been metal we might have been able to get something back. It all depends on the dents and kinks in the platter."

We went to extreme lengths to damage our drive - too extreme as it turned out. But what are the typical types of damage seen at the firm?

Phil Bridge, managing director at Ontrack, said: "Dropped laptops and spill damage is common. We also see a lot of drives where data has been deleted accidentally.

"In those cases we can typically retrieve 100% of the data."

Mr Winter said: "The first thing we do is make an exact image of the media on the drive. The reason for that is that the drives are often failing or have failed and the best way of preserving the best image we can get is to process the hard drive on to an exact copy.

Data Recovery in Desktop Systems

As the use of laptops are becoming more but also it is not enough to replace desktop especially in offices. In offices still large no of Desktop systems are available which are in use. And so the Data Recovery or the protection from data loss or disk crashes is the must. Always go for the right data Recovery solutions available in the market. As the office data is one of the most precious one to be lost by any firm so management of data from data crashes is the must to be taken of.

Although there are a large number of companies which provide these solutions but choose the most reliable one from tem. As the office desktop uses the local Hard Disk or the centralized disk storage system to store the data in it so a s to backup the data when any crash occurs. There are many methods involve in doing so. RAID is one of the most important techniques which are followed in the windows based system. Another thing to do for the prevention from the loss or recovery of the lost data if the data is stored locally on the system is to opt for a Data Recovery Software which promises to recover almost whole of the data lost. So follow above steps so as to make your desktop system free from any data crashes or loss.

Data Recovery

While in this modern world where the use of electronic goods mainly the use of computer has been risen to a much large extend. Now every individual knows or has good hands on computer. But as the use of these computers is growing day by day their problems are also rising. The main problem which most of us face is the loss of data or the dusk crash. This is the major problem and as the size of the memory chip is getting smaller and smaller with larger disk space this has raised to large extend.

So one must take an extra care to avoid these data losses and also disk crashes. As many of the work today has become online or through net connect these system falls to virus attacks and results to a data corruption or full disk crash. In any of the way you are going to have the loss of the data. So it is better to have a data recovery technique or something like that so a s to recover the data even after data loss or the crash has been occurred. Before having to use your system for storing important data make you system first of all free from virus attacks so as to prevent your Hard Disk crash and then go for Data Recovery techniques. As it is always said "Prevention is better than cure"

Initial steps in hard drive recovery (free-backup.info)

If you find that your hard drive is no longer functioning, remember that a hard drive recovery is nearly always possible, so there is no need for panic. Data loss is not unusual and in nearly all cases the data can be recovered. Only in severe severe cases involving platter damage, magnetic degradation, or over-write of a file will the data be practically unrecoverable…

Data recovery firm sounds Mac hard drive damage alert

Updated Data recovery company Retrodata has challenged Apple to come clean about what it claims is a "critical manufacturing flaw" affecting some hard drives used in MacBook laptops and desktops like the Mac Mini - an issue that could result in data loss.

According to Retrodata, its customers have sent in a much higher number of failed Seagate 2.5in SATA drives made in China and loaded with firmware version 7.01 than of any other current hard drive model.

Disk data loss caused by magnetic avalanches

Scientists have discovered that "avalanche" effects in spinning magnetic fields can cause data loss in disk drives - and are working on changes to recording layer chemistry that should give us more reliable storage.

Crashed Hard Disk Drive Heads

The hard drive is most likely making a grinding and scraping noise. Think dentist drill, its painful, and thats how it feels for your drive. Sounds nasty and is stripping the magnetic coating off the platters. Immediately turn the drive off and disconnect it from your computer. Then call us. Repeated use in this state is rapidly decreasing the chances of recovery. The sooner we can start the recovery, the greater the chance of success before it totally corrupts the hard drive data platter.

Again, do not run 'software' recovery programs in this state. They cause Disk I/O read / writes, and this places increased stress on the heads, which causes errors to be written to the disk, further decreasing the chances of data recovery.

Common Faults observed in Hard Disk Drives - Failure - Failed - Dead!

Commonly known as the 'Click of Death'. Your hard drive is on its way out, along with your data. One of the noisy hd faults.
A common fault which is usually easy to spot. When the drive is initially powered up, a logic check ensures that the drive has attained the necessary speed before launching the heads across the platter. If the drive can not attain a 'Ready' state, the logic is repeated for a pre-determined number of times causing a clicking sound, after which it stops trying.Your hard disk drive now appears dead.

Do not run 'software' recovery programs in this state. They cause Disk I/O read / writes, and this places increased stress on the heads, which causes errors to be written to the disk, further decreasing the chances of data recovery.

Hitachi Laptop Hard Drive Data Recovery

There are many laptop manufacturers who use Hitachi notebook hard disk drives. You can find them in Dell and Sony's to name just a couple. As you are probably aware, Hitachi purchased IBM's hard disk drive division in 2002. I remember the date well since it was on my birthday June 4th. Hitachi kept the 2 primary hard disk lines going: Travelstar and Deskstar.

With the takeover, quality of the hard drives didn't fall off, in fact the drives actually got better! Take for instance the Deskstar. This drive was commonly referred to as the Deathstar drive in the computer repair industry. Now it is one of the better drives. Since Hitachi maintained, if not increased, IBM's market share of hard disk sales, DTI sees a lot of Hitachi hard drives sent in for data recovery. This isn't a statement against Hitachi or the quality of their drives. ALL HARD DRIVES FAIL! If you are interested in the reason for the failures read my wife's post Why Hard Drives Fail .
OK the sales portion of the post is over so lets start talking about specific hard disk recovery issues we run into with Hitachi laptop or notebook drives. The most common Hitachi laptop hard drive is the Travelstar.

Here is a collection of model numbers with current faults we are seeing although this is not gospel and diagnostic procedures need to be run before accurate fault prognoses can be found
